American Tower has begun the vertical construction of its first Aggregation Edge Data Center in Raleigh, North Carolina. This milestone represents a turning point as American Tower gets ready to open the facility in early 2025.
Prior to this milestone, construction crews completed all site preparation and civil engineering activities at the existing American Tower site, including utility coordination and the creation of new access roads. The team will now receive prefabricated data center modules on-site and integrate them into a single facility.
American Tower Construction and Commissioning Process
Once the data center modules have been delivered, assembled, and integrated on-site, the final phase will be preparing the facility to be ready for its customers. The scope of this work includes network and security installation, among other key tasks. When deployed at the end of this phase, the Raleigh Data Center will be capable of delivering one (1) megawatt of power and is expected to span 4,000 square feet in the initial build.
The Raleigh facility is the first Aggregation Edge Data Center offered by American Tower, delivering low latency and high throughput to serve as an interconnection hub for the digital ecosystem. Aggregation Edge Data Centers support a wide range of use cases, such as hybrid cloud, High-Performance Computing (HPC), and Artificial Intelligence (AI) inferencing, which enables local enterprises to improve business outcomes with modern technologies. Raleigh represents an ideal data center location, since it is one of the fastest-growing metro areas in the U.S. and is near renowned academic institutions and large enterprises in Research Triangle Park.1
